Lip products aren't just for the ladies
Dry lips are bad on women, men, girls, boys and everyone in between! It is also common for guys who work outdoors (like tradies) or those who are active (such as surfers) to suffer from particularly dry lips due to environmental factors such as being in the sun (make sure to wear an SPF!) or the drying wind. If you or your guy is conscious of wearing lip products, reach for one that looks just as at-home in his hand as it does hers. Carmex Lip Balm Squeeze Tube not only does this with its signature red and yellow classic packaging, but more importantly provides long lasting relief for dry chapped lips and contains salicylic acid to provide gentle exfoliating benefits. Keep one in your pants pocket to never be caught with sore and dry lips again!
A scented body wash can help wake you up in the morning
Lots of men's products are similarly scented, which can mean that guys don't get to experiment with different fragrances as often as women do with their normal beauty routines. A good way of integrating new fragrances into your life is with essential oils, which can have very different effects on your moods. This makes sense when you think about the differences between scents that make you feel more relaxed (like lavendar), or more awake (like mint). Try a scented body wash first thing in the morning to get a little more spring in your step (especially after a big working week or a late night out!) We love Sranrom's Awakening Vitality Body Wash, which contains aloe vera, lemongrass and kafir lime.
Speaking of fragrance, less is more when it comes to cologne
It's amazing that you to want to smell good, but don't over do it when it comes to cologne. Apply only at the pulse points. This way, you get the most out of your fragrance and won't waste it with needless spraying. Your pulse points are the base of your throat, behind your ears, and at the wrists; these are the places where your veins are closest to the skin's surface, which make the fragrance warm naturally and disperse into the air. Also remember that less is always more. We all know the guy who leaves an offensive cologne trail a mile long behind him. And no one wants to be (or be near) that guy! For a masculine scent that's not too overwhelming, try Z Zegna Eau De Toilette.
Keep your nails short and clean
Keeping your nails well groomed is really important, as your hands are always on display! Short and clean are a must. All you need is a trusty nail clipper to keep them from being too long plus a nail scrubbing brush and soap to get rid of daily dirt and grime. A nail buffer (looks like a nail file but looks a little more padded and isn't as abbrasive) will also keep your nails looking shiney, but not like you are wearing a glossy nail polish! Simply swipe over your entire nail to buff away any ridges for a healthy look.
Cleanse your face AND your neck
Be sure not to focus all of your attention onto your face at the expense of your neck. Your cleanser and even your exfoliator can work just as hard a little further south. This is especially the case if you suffer from ingrown hairs or pimples on your neck around the growth of hair folicles. Scrubbing here will help to remove any blockages in the skin and soften the hairs for a smoother shave. So be sure to cleanse and exfoliate before the razors or clippers come out!
We love Bioderma Sebium Foaming Gel as a daily cleanser
Men's skin ages too!
Even though fine lines on the guys are often more acceptable than on the women (a prime example being Brad's rugged look compared to Ange's wrinkle-free forehead!) anti-aging products aren't just for the ladies. When it comes to anti-aging, prevention is better than trying to turn back the clock. Try using an anti-aging moisturising product that contains vitamins and antioxidants, so you don't have to integrate an entirely new step into your grooming routine. Our pick? Lancome Men Age Fight Anti-Age Perfecting Fluid.
There's a reason you cut yourself when shaving...
The dreaded razor cut. There is nothing worse than when you need a quick shave but end up nicking yourself over and over again. And it is kind of hard to hide when it's on your face! The air pockets that can form between your razor and your shaving gel or foam can increase the likelihood of cuts, so it is best to reach for a good quality formulation that can provide the ultimate close shave. We love American Crew Precision Shave Gel, which does just this and also contians pumpkin seed extract, tea tree oil and aloe vera oil to soothe the skin.
You don't have to suffer through spots
Unfortunately, spots don't magically stop appearing on your skin as soon as you leave your teens. If you suffer from the occasional pimple, look out for a treatment that targets the blemish without drying your skin, and apply it before bed. A great pick for girls and guys alike is Bioderma's Sebium AKN. This purifying cream helps to calm blemishes and blockages by reducing the skin's sebum levels (the stuff that makes your skin feel oily) Apply to problem areas at night and rinse off when you wash your face, during your morning shower, with your cleanser of choice. And remember, if you suffer from bad acne, go to your GP and get a referral to see a dermatologist who can give you a professional opinion. It's just not worth agonising over when you can do something about it!
Mask's aren't just a lazy man's prop for fancy dress parties
Hydrating masks are one of the best ways to rehydrate tired and dull skin - ace for after long stints travelling. But fear not. They don't require hours of lounging about in a white robe with cucumber on your eyes! Rather, they only need about 10 minutes to do all their hard work. Simply sqeeze out enough cream to be able to apply a thick layer to your dry face and neck and wait for it to sink into the skin. After 10-15 minutes gently wipe or wash off the excess. We love Avene's Soothing Moisture Mask which leaves skin feeling soothed and renewed when used once a week. Just be sure not to confuse moisturising masks with mud masks (the mud ones draw impurities out of the skin and dry hard on your face, so they have to be washed off)
Stand up straight
Never underestimate the difference standing up straight can do! You'll seem more confident and approachable (always a good look for the single guys out there!) Plus, your back will love you for it.
Lastly, clothes make the difference...
What good is it being groomed to your finest if you let the look down with a torn up tee and ill-fitting jeans? The top rules for dressing? Only buy and wear what fits. Too big and you'll look dowdy, too small and you'll look like you are trying too hard. Classic items in great fabrics will never date. These include collared shirts, slim (but not skinny) dark denim jeans, a killer suit for special occasions, and leather shoes and belts (try to get them to match for a polished look) Whatever you wear, wear it with confidence and you'll not only look good, but feel good too. And really, that's what it's all about!
